Inside Strada Café The coffee culture in Paris is très différent from what we are used to in the United States. Parisians like to "take" their coffee during the day like Americans do. However, you will often see locals order coffee at the bar, sometimes standing up while enjoying an espresso and reading a newspaper in the mornings. The most surprising thing to me is how different the coffee options on the menu are from the ones in America... or Starbucks (which are pretty easy to find in Paris). I've compiled a quick guide of the typical Parisian coffee menu (and more!) below. You know, for the caffeine-deprived, clueless Americans we are. An "expresso" or "petit café" is shot of espresso, which usually comes with a sugar cube on the side. People order this at any time of the day - with petit-déjeuner (breakfast), between errands, or even after a long day of work. The best espresso I've had in Paris yet would have to be at Strada Café, a cute hole-in-the-wall just walking distance from Hôtel de Ville. Petit-déjeuner at Le Faubourg The closest thing you'll get to drip coffee at a typical Parisian cafe is a "café noir" or "café allongé." This is the same as an Americano back at home -- a diluted shot of espresso with water. Little will know the difference between a "café crème" and a "café au lait," which is essentially a caffè latte in America. However, the "café au lait" is usually served with breakfast, and the "café crème" at any other time of the day. Probably the prettiest coffee option on the menu, the "café crème" and "café au lait" are each made with a shot of espresso and either cream or steamed milk. Cue the latte art Instas! Ordering an iced coffee in Paris is a little less common. "Café glace" would be the the best way to ask for an iced coffee. Not many places in Paris serve this, but it doesn't hurt to ask! Our favorite spot for an iced coffee (with milk) is Blackburn. Sometimes, Coutume Café has some awesome cold brews available as well.
